Trip Report

I had to be in Hailey for work for a few days, so I ventured up on Sunday and wanted to stretch the legs. Despite a forecast of 50% chance of snow, I went out anyway. I drove to the end of the plowed portion of Trail Creek Road out of Sun Valley. The road is plowed to just past the shooting range. This also happens to be where the south ridge of Triple Peak (Peak 8398) meets the road.

Triple Peak is on the Trail Creek/Lake Creek divide. It is just northeast of Sun Peak and southeast of Rock Roll Peak (both are on the same ridge).

The temparature was in the 30's with little wind. The bigger peaks were in cloud, but everything else was overcast, with some snow to the north. Off I headed.

The intial 1000 feet of steep hillside was on dirt. This made for quick progress. As I went beyond Point 7022 the snow started and I put on snowshoes.

The final ridge between 8182 (the first of the triple peaks) and the highest point was a bit dicey in spots, with a narrow cornice. Be careful if the avalanche danger is high, as I think you could start a slide either direction on the ridge.

It was snowing hard for the last 1000 feet of climbing, so I couldn't see anything on the summit.

Once I was back down to about 7800' everything cleared out of course. At the time I thought that was cool, but 5 minutes later when I was breaking through snow that was supportable on my way up, I realized it wasn't that cool!

Getting There

In winter just follow Trail Creek to the end of the plowing. In summer, park just past the gun club.

Hiking Directions

From Trail Creek Road, start hiking up to Point 7002, which sits south of Triple Peak. Continue to follow the south ridge until Point 8192. Turn right and follow the ridge over the middle summit and to the highest summit at 8398 feet.
