Trip Report

I was in Arizona with my daughter, who was attending a 4-day softball camp. She was going from 9am to 3pm each day and I didn't really want to be there hovering over her, so I planned some hikes each day. On day 2, I chose to hike up Squaw Butte.

Their was a 50% chance of rain on day 2 of the camp. Knowing that, I looked for a quick peak to hike. Since Squaw Butte was only about a 2 hour round trip hike, perfect for this kind of day. When I arrived at the trailhead, a heavy rain shower was overhead. I waited about 5 minutes for the rain to ease and then headed up the old road to the summit. Despite the rain, there were a few people on the trail. Views were limited with storm clouds about, but I could see some cool cityscapes and views of peaks north of Phoenix from time-to-time.

After about an hour, I was on top of the tower filled summit. I made my way to a high rocky point. It was foggy, but hadn't rained on my hike. I grabbed a snack and drink and was on my way. The weather held until I reached the trailhead. Other than being wet and limited visibility, it was still nice to stretch the legs and view a new area.

Getting There

Take the Thunderbird Road exit (#210). Follow Thunderbird Rd. East for about 3 miles until you reach Central Avenue. Once you reach Central Ave. turn right (South) and follow it for about a quarter of a mile until you reach the trailhead parking lot.

Hiking Directions

From the trailhead, follow the old road to the summit.
