Trip Report
We really enjoyed our hike of Hamblin Mountain in the Lake Mead National Recreation area the day before. We had some more exploring to do, but less time today, so we were looking for a quick, but scenic hike in the same area.
I did some research and found Redstone Peak. The scramble up Redstone Peak started at the very scenic Redstone Picnic area off of Northshore Road.
The weather was much clearer than the previous day and warm... luckily there was a breeze. We basically followed what we thought was the Redstone Dune Trail. However, there were trails splintering off in all directions and the terrain is open, so we just headed towards Redstone Peak. The red rock was amazing, especially with the blue skies behind it!
We made our way to the wash that separated Redstone Peak and Point 950. I had read that I wanted to get to the saddle between Redstone Peak and Mystery Cairn Peak. That said, I left the draw too early and didn't like the terrain to course correct, so we ended up just beelining it straight for the peak. The route was doable and fun in spots, but the rock was a bit loose in places to make it truly enjoyable.
After over 500 feet of tricky route finding with a lot of class 3 climbing, the last 100 feet opened up to easier terrain. Soon we were on top of the peak enjoying a great 360 degree view of Lake Mead and the surrounding area. With clear skies and limited haze, the views were amazing.
Instead of repeating our steep route, we hiked to the saddle between Redstone Peak and Mystery Cairn Peak, then followed a "not-so-steep" slope down, before eventually getting back on our route from the ascent.
This is a great peak for anyone with some time to kill in the Las Vegas area! The peak is impressive from the parking lot and has over 1000' of prominence.
