Trip Report

Carrie and I were in Las Vegas for a mini-vacation after I attended a software conference. On Friday, we decided to visit the Valley of Fire.

We did 3 peaks:

Thin Peak:
Thin Peak is technically in the Valley of Fire, but not a "red" or sandstone peak. This is more just a desert peak with a nice view and steep north face. We saw a rattlesnake about mid-mountain, making for some excitement. He was below a handhold and I got within a foot or two of him... luckily I didn't get bit. The top 50 feet of the peak offered an nice scramble on mostly solid rock.

Weekapaug Mountain:
Weekapaug is a complex and really neat scramble. We loosely followed directions from the guidebook, finding occasional cairns. Towards the top, it was basically trial and error finding the route to the top. There was some excellent class 3 climbing to be had. Carrie thoroughly enjoyed this peak.

Cairn Peak:
Cairn is another sandstone peak with a very short approach and fun scrambling. I thought the top provided incredible views of the Valley of Fire. We did the round trip of this peak in less than an hour, so it is a quick endeavor.

Getting There

See the GPS tracks below. All 3 peaks are accessible off of paved roads in the Valley of Fire State Park.
